Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 Might Not Launch on Next-Gen Consoles This Year

September 2, 2021

CD Projekt has said that it cannot guarantee that Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher 3 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this year.

While CD Projekt is still aiming for late 2021 releases, the developer told shareholders during a recent earnings call that the targets could be missed.

According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, the reason for a possible Cyberpunk 2077 delay is because the studio is working hard to ensure it doesn’t repeat mistakes it made with the game’s initial launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

“The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year,” SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski said. “At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”

That game was widely criticized by players and suffered a variety of technical issues and glitches, which eventually forced Sony to remove it from sale on the PlayStation Store. The studio has spent much of the last year patching the title to solve these problems.

Nowakowski also stated that while a next-gen release for The Witcher 3 is on track for late 2021, it could also be pushed back into 2022. Though the development of this port is being handled by Saber Interactive, a similarly cautious approach is being taken by CD Projekt. “The development process is ongoing, and we cannot be absolutely dead certain that the release schedule will not change,” Nowakowski said.

“We definitely are aiming with both titles for late 2021 and I don’t want to be more specific at this moment in time.”
