Sony Claims It Supports Cross-Play

June 21, 2021

Sony has changed its longstanding policy regarding cross-play, stating that it now fully supports the feature.

Speaking in an interview with Axios, Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the company wants to see cross-play included in more games going forward.

According to Ryan, Sony will continue to allow cross-platform multiplayer on its consoles going forward and will encourage developers to include it in more titles.

During the interview, Ryan said, “We support and encourage cross-play,” nothing cross-platform functionality on PlayStation for titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League, Minecraft, and more. He also noted the “number [of cross-play games] will continue to grow.”

Sony was the last of the three big game console makers to allow cross-play on its systems, with Microsoft and Nintendo being early adopters of the feature. The first cross-play games for the PS4 appeared in 2018 but many developers have pointed out that Sony still makes it difficult to enable cross-play on PlayStation consoles.

For instance, last month, Gearbox announced that Borderlands 3 would receive cross-play support on all platforms except for PlayStation.

Furthermore, court documents from the Epic-Apple trial revealed the deal Sony made to allow cross-play for Fortnite. In exchange for cross-play support, they receive a cut of revenue from players who mostly play on PlayStation but buy in-game items on other platforms.
