The Nintendo Switch is an incredible console that allows for some really neat opportunities. Among them is the option to play your favorite games wherever you want to play them. Around the time of release, the Switch library was a little bit bare on games that utilized this in a meaningful way.
Fortunately, however, the Switch has slowly built an incredible library of third-party games that all feature the handheld playstyle. This means that some of your favorite games can be played however you want, whenever you want. As such, let’s take a look at some of the best ports that players can play on the Nintendo Switch.
Baldur’s Gate I & II
Two of the most highly regarded western RPGs are now available in portable form. These sprawling, epic games being available on such a convenient console is pretty incredible. They offer a ton of gameplay and content, plus the games are ported to the Switch so perfectly that they’re worth at least looking into.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
There’s a lot of jokes to be made about Skyrim being ported to every device under the sun, but this port is a bit more than that. Upon its 2011 release, Skyrim was a beloved game featuring hundreds of hours of content. Nearly a decade later, we are now able to experience this award-winning adventure on the go. All in all, that’s pretty awesome.
The port is good, and the game is still fun for those who enjoy Bethesda RPGs. Plus, the port is of the Legendary edition, which comes with all of the fantastic expansion packs.
Cuphead
Can you think of a better place to rage than in a public setting? The wonderfully animated, tough-as-nails game Cuphead is now available on Nintendo Switch. This game is actually perfect for the Switch, as well.
Being able to sneak in a few minutes of the lovely 2D animation throughout your day is great. Plus, by using two joycons, you can set up an impromptu co-op session easily. This means a buddy might be able to help you out with that really tough level you’ve been stuck on. Alternatively, you can both just grow increasingly frustrated at each other and end your friendship right there. It’s a coin flip situation, really.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
This fascinating game should be experienced by all. While there is a slight visual downgrade, especially from the PC version, the Switch handles the game surprisingly well. It looks great, plays great, and sounds fantastic. Anyone familiar with Senua’s Sacrifice will know that the sound design is the most important aspect of this game.
Anyone who is interested in Norse mythology or the deeper psychology of a character should look into this game.
Alien: Isolation
No matter what you play it on, Alien: Isolation is one of the scariest horror games that can be found these days. Nothing can compare to the feeling of being mercilessly hunted by the titular alien, knowing that one simple mistake could result in a very painful end.
Naturally, this is a perfect game for a family friendly Nintendo console! Taking this wonderful sci-fi horror game on the go could either help with the fear factor or make it a bit worse. In any case, the port is great and really shows off what the Nintendo Switch can accomplish when compared to other consoles.
Doom (2016)
Oddly enough, Doom (2016) is a great game to play in a portable environment. Dropping in for some demon-slaying action while taking a quick work break is great fun. Plus, the game runs really well while also having a fair visual trade-off.
Some people would argue that there are better ways to play one of the best shooters of this generation. However, anyone wanting to work in a quick playthrough before jumping into Doom Eternal should definitely consider this version.
Stardew Valley
The Nintendo Switch may just be the best possible place for Stardew Valley to end up. Honestly, this game is pretty much perfect for gaming on the go. Whether you’re trying to relax a little during a stressful day or unwinding during a comfy evening, there’s always a good time to do a little bit of farming.
Anyone who wants to prepare for Animal Crossing: New Horizons or who simply needs something to tide them over until they can get their hands on it should give Stardew Valley a chance!
Dragon Ball FighterZ
For all the fighting fans out there, Nintendo Switch also allows you scratch that competitive itch on the go. Featuring a still growing cast of characters from one of the most acclaimed anime ever, this game plays fantastically on the Switch.
The artstyle and visuals also lend themselves well to the console. That, added to the performance, makes for a solid experience for anyone wanting to try a portable fighting game.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+
This roguelike port is a perfect addition to the Switch library. It’s great for quick pickup and go gaming sessions, and the artstyle looks great in both docked and undocked modes. Although, it can be a pretty disgusting game in most cases, so playing it in public areas may not be the best idea. Keep this one to yourself at home!
The Witcher 3: Wild hunt
Among all of the Nintendo Switch ports to be released so far, this one may be the most impressive. While Skyrim may be an impressive feat for the console, this port was widely thought to be impossible.
Featuring hundreds of hours of award-winning storytelling and gameplay, this edition of Wild Hunt also comes with both huge expansion packs. While the visual downgrade is pretty obvious, the game does play pretty well. Being able to experience Geralt’s adventures wherever you go is a pretty compelling reason to overlook the sometimes disappointing visuals, though.
